Losing Sleep
Last Spring, I complained about the switch to Daylight Savings Time. Losing an hour of sleep and dark mornings usually make me grouchy for at least a week.
Yesterday we switched back to Standard Time but recovering my hour has provided little solace. Since I was up reading long enough to see the clocks change, and I was awake (if not actually stirring) at my usual early morning hour, I really didn’t gain anything. And now, at five PM, it’s almost completely dark.
As though mother nature knew how depressing the earlier sunset would be for us, today she arranged a gray, dreary day to match the mood. Yesterday the sky was on fire at six PM, today at five it’s just a deeper gray.
There has been a proposal to make Daylight Savings Time permanent, which I do not favor. However, I am not concerned because the legislation is in the hands of our dysfunctional Congress, and they are too entrenched in partisan bickering to accomplish much of anything. Of course, after the midterm elections they may get busy further dismantling everything I believe in, abetted by the Supreme Court. And regardless of what the clocks say – that keeps me awake at night.
