Miracles

I was surprised to find a quote from Jon Bon Jovi in the book Imagining Abundance. Fundraising, Philanthropy and a Spiritual Call to Service, by Kerry Alys Robinson, but the content made sense:

Miracles happen every day, change your perception of what a miracle is and you’ll see them all around you.

While Robinson is elevating fundraising and philanthropy to a spiritual endeavor, Bon Jovi is bringing the miraculous down to earth. Miracles do not need to be of biblical proportions, he’s saying, they are everywhere around us if we take the time to notice them.

Just a few weeks ago the plants near my house were just shoots emerging from the earth. Now they are lush with blossoms. It happens every year, yet it always amazes me. I know the science that enables the plants to convert sun, water, and the nutrients in the soil into flowers, but when it actually happens it is nothing short of a miracle.

A pink and orange sunset, white wisps of clouds against an azure sky, the countless shades of green I can see outside my window. They will be there whether I notice them or not. But when I do, I am changed. I am grateful, humbled, and inspired. A flower becomes a poem, the poem becomes a prayer. I pray that I won’t stop noticing.
